Using a WordPress Page as Your Home Page

Welcome to WordPress Wednesday! Each week we’ll be answering as many of your questions about the blogging platform WordPress as possible. If you have questions you’d like answered that aren’t covered here, feel free to drop them in the comment form below. Covering topics such as themes, plugins, popular tutorials, current WordPress promotion codes, and more – be sure to jump in with your questions and comments.

QUESTION: I’d like to use something other than my recent posts as my home page. Is that possible within WordPress?

It’s not only possible it’s relatively easy. The first step is to create a page to serve as your new home page. For the purpose of this example, we’ll call it “My New Home Page.”

  1. In your WP control panel, select the Pages tab.
  2. Click on Add New.
  3. Give the page a title – something like, “HOMEPAGE”
  4. Create the content for your home page just as you would a blog post.
  5. Click the Publish button.

While you’re still in the Write Page subpanel, create a second page:

  1. Title this one “RECENT POSTS” (or whatever you want to call the page that your recent posts appear on).
  2. You don’t need to have any Page Content for this one.
  3. Click the Publish button.

Now you’re ready tell WP to use your new page as the home page:

  1. In the Settings panel on the left navigation select Reading.
  2. At the top of the Reading Options subpanel you’ll see:

  3. To change the front page to your new home page, select “A static page” for Front page displays.
  4. Select “HOMEPAGE” from the Front page drop down menu.
  5. Finally, be sure to tell WP which page to use to display your recent posts. From the Posts page menu select the “Recent Posts” page you created earlier. As you can see in the picture below, our posts page has not been set yet.

  6. Click Save Changes.

View your site. “HOMEPAGE” should now be your home page. You also do not need to put the title in all caps. This was simply done for our example.

Note: Any Page content you have entered for the page you designate as your Posts page will be overwritten by the listing of your recent posts. The content will still be there, it simply won’t show while you have that particular page set as the Post page.

Themes Town: A MUST SEE For Anyone Who Uses WordPress

A site in the WordPress Themes space has recently launched that is pretty amazing. Not only from a product standpoint, but also due to the creativity of their website. Let’s start from the beginning.

What Is Themes Town?

Their homepage starts with an interesting statement…“Imagine never having to buy another WordPress Theme ever again?”

From there they take you on this very creative journey showing how they have pre-screened thousands of free WordPress Themes to list the only the best of the best (around 160 as of the writing of this article). On top of that they release a new premium Theme each month to their members. This is a pretty unique concept as finding good free Themes is not necessarily hard, it’s knowing whether they are actually free of malicious code and developed well that is the concern. Themes Town does all the research then organizes everything in a pretty cool members area.

Given that we are a web design site, we are always on the lookout for the latest trends in web development. In this instance, we were very impressed by the totally responsive layout that Themes Town created. Navigating the site was like reading a story (by clicking next at the bottom right of each page when you were ready to go to the next), and everything stayed above the fold. Note the black arrows on the left/right at the bottom – simply click there to navigate around.

Another cool feature was the cloud “drawer” at the top. At any point along the way, you could click the plus button in the upper right hand side to have the clouds expand to present some simple navigation and the Join Button.

The site also looks great on tablets and mobile phones with it being touch enabled (so you can swipe your way through the different pages when on a mobile/tablet device). All in all, this is a truly creative web design!

The Basic Web Page Structure – HTML5 List of Tags


You can think of an HTML page as a series of containers. After an opening statement that defines the type of page to follow, there is one large element, the <html> tag, that contains the two primary structural elements, and <body>.

HTML documents consist of a tree of elements and text. Each element is denoted in the source by a start tag, such as “<body>“, and an end tag, such as “</body>“. (Certain start tags and end tags can in certain cases be omitted and are implied by other tags.)

Here’s how the basic essential code for an HTML5 web page looks:

Before we can fully appreciate what these containers or placeholders do to our webpage we need to know how they function. Below is a list of HTML5 compliant tags we can use to study and familiarize ourselves with as to the description and function of each tag. Let’s do a little exercise. As you go through the list, pick a web page (any, even this one) and right click on it. Select “view page source” and try to find the tags listed here and look for them in the page source. Try to classify which ones are basic tags, formatting tags, image tags, and so on. While you are at it, challenge yourself to decode the code. Have fun!
